Philadelphia International Airport is along the Delaware River in Southwest Philadelphia. The Airport is a major Eastern hub serving Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Southwest New Jersey with 26 airlines flying daily to 100 national and international destinations.
The Airport has 17,000 parking spaces, nine shuttles and public transit. Taxis cost a $25 flat rate to downtown. If you are just flying in to see the Liberty Bell, you are also covered with the Lady Liberty Shuttle bus. One of the most inexpensive modes of ground transportation from the terminal is the Southeast Pennsylvania Train Authority (SPTA) train. It is a high speed rail service anyone can take for $5.50 to most major Philly neighborhoods.
Philadelphia is known as “the City of brotherly love”. It was dubbed that because Philly’s citizenry has always been known for their cordiality. One of those symbols is the Rocky Statue at the Art Museum. The statue commemorates Sylvester Stallone movie boxing character Rocky Balboa, a mythical boxer who hailed from Philadelphia. A real sense of boxing history can be found at the Blue Horizon arena where famous boxers like former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier have fought.
Philadelphia is a sports mecca, sporting franchises in the NFL, National League and NBA. The Phillies of the National League were the 2008 World Champs. The Eagles football team was the only club to offer Michael Vick a rehabilitation home. The 76ers haven’t been an NBA powerhouse since Alan Iverson left the team.
This Eastern colonial city is also steeped in tradition and history. Philadelphia is the site where our forefathers drafted the U.S. Constitution at Constitution Center.
Additional historical sites visitors should see are the Betsy Ross House, where she crafted the first U.S. flag. Another attraction, which is a short taxi ride from downtown, is the Valley Forge National Park in Montgomery County.
